You can use our Deed of Revocation of a Power of Attorney template when you:
- have granted a general power of attorney, enduring power of attorney or Lasting Power of Attorney in the past and you no longer need it;
- do not trust the previous attorney any longer; or
- want to change the attorney to a different person.
Revoking a Power of Attorney
In each case, you need to revoke the original power of attorney. To change the attorney to a new person, first revoke the old attorney using this template and then appoint a new attorney in a separate, new Power of Attorney.
Unless something unfortunate happens, a power of attorney generally lasts until:
- any time limit it originally had expires; or
- you revoke it.
A Lasting Power of Attorney is revoked by your contacting the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) and sending them both (a) the original of the LPA and (b) the deed of revocation.
In each case, you need to have mental capacity in order to revoke a power of attorney. However, a general power of attorney will cease to have effect in any case if you permanently lose mental capacity.

Once signed, you should send a photocopy of the deed of revocation of a power of attorney to the original attorney to give them notice that they are no longer to act for you as attorney. You should ask them to return any copies of the power of attorney that they may have. You should also notify anyone who the attorney might have been liaising with on your behalf under the power of attorney, e.g. banks, financial advisers, etc.
