St Albans has been documented throughout history, first getting its place on the map as the first major town on Watling Street, the old Roman road heading north. In fact, back then it was known as Verulamium, and it is this period of history which still shapes its personality today.
A market town, St Albans is somewhat of an unsung delight, largely due to its reputation as solely a commuter town for London 20 miles to the south. However, this is a peaceful spot, especially if you indulge in a wander through Verulamium Park (not forgetting to take in the Verulamium museum).
