Hartlepool, on the North Sea coast, in County Durham is just north of Middlesborough and south of Sunderland. The area has an interesting history, largely centring on naval and maritime affairs, growing as a port for moving coal from northern England, as well as for shipbuilding.
After World War II there was heavy decline in the area and Hartlepool suffered with particularly high levels of unemployment. This has been addressed through regeneration projects which have seen tourism become more important for the town. Nonetheless, engineering jobs are still the main focus here. The chemicals industry is also important for the local economy of Hartlepool.
