Darlington is a market town with a modern yet relaxed feel. The town centre is easy to navigate on foot, not least because of its pedestrianised heart. You’ll find an interesting mix of high street chains, independent shops, cafes and markets.
Darlington is perhaps most famous for its rail history. It was during the Georgian and Victorian eras, largely due to the town’s local Quaker families, that the Stockton and Darlington Railway – the first steam locomotive – was powered. You can now visit Stephenson’s ‘Locomotion’ at the Darlington Railway Centre and Museum.
There’s plenty more to do in Darlington, and the town runs various events throughout the year.
