Just 11 miles south of Sheffield is the market town with its crooked church spire, of Chesterfield. Sitting at the confluence of the Hipper and Rother rivers, it is an important town in Derbyshire, only second to Derby itself.

It would appear that the Romans first had a fort here, but history is then somewhat patchier until its importance for sitting on a coal seam, making it economically worthy until the 1980s. However, now it’s hard to know mining was once so important here, and instead the town is dominated by its thriving street market where 250 stalls can be found three days of the week.
