Apprenticeships Report 2018

Following on from last’s year’s report on Apprenticeships statistics (if you missed it, you can catch-up on it here: Legalo’s Apprenticeships Report 2017), we have prepared an update based on the apprenticeships statistics for 2016-17 that were published recently by the Government. Unfortunately the Government introduced a levy on larger employers who take on apprentices that came into force just before the end of the 2016-17 year, and, just as you might predict, its effect on new starters was almost instant.
There’s almost certainly a more significant drop off in new starters around the corner. (Current discussions in the media and recently-released figures for the first quarter of the current year (2017-18) are showing this new levy is now having a devastating effect on new starter numbers.)

However, despite this, total apprenticeship numbers are up. The age split for apprentices continues to surprise us, with the proportion of older apprentices increasing yet again. Our favourite business sector (Business Administration & Law) has been knocked off the top spot. Which sector is now the most popular?

Apprenticeships report – conclusion
We hope that you found our report into the apprenticeship sector interesting. What surprised you the most in these statistics? The government ambushing its own initiative by imposing a new levy on the larger employers seems to us the saddest outcome. So predictable and yet the government blunders into these issues as if taken by surprise by them.
